Toni Hassan has been employed as advocacy consultant by Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV), an organisation that links skilled volunteers with communities that have need of their particular skills. She has also worked extensively as a journalist, for ABC radio and television in Australia, Reuters in South Africa, the Asahi Shimbun in Japan, and National Public Radio in North America.
Hassan has also written articles that have appeared in the Koori Mail, an Indigenous newspaper. Her coverage of the health issues of refugees held in detention resulted in both a Human Rights Award and a Walkley Award (for Best Feature, Documentary or Broadcast Special).
