A 'new chum' to Melbourne uses up his money soon after his arrival. Acquaintances made through letters of introduction quickly fade and he is left derelict. Early on Christmas Day, the 'new chum' collapses at the door of St Patrick's Cathedral. He is rescued by an elderly priest, cared for and set on his way.
