Harold Chesterman left Australia as a fourteen-year-old to begin a career in the British merchant navy. After completing officer training, Chesterman served with the British Navy during World War II before returning to Australia. He worked for three decades for the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service, maintaining lights along the Queensland coast.
