BiographyHistory

Elizabeth Mary Ann Hodges (b. ca.1800) had been housekeeper to John Pitts, and received a modest legacy from his will after his death in 1844. She quickly established herself as a Pitts' successor, opening her own "Toy and Marble Warehouse" at 31 Monmouth Street (renamed Dudley Street in 1845), where she also printed broadside ballads on a similar plan to Pitts. Another of Pitts' former servants, Ann Guichard, also attempted to trade in Pitts' name, but does not appear to have been as successful as Hodges. About 1855 Hodges relocated her business to no. 26 Grafton Street, Soho. She is thought to have remained in the printing trade until at least 1861.
