BiographyHistory

Michael Long was a skilled Australian Rules footballer who won the Norm Smith Medal in 1993. Long spoke out against racism in the Australian Football League (AFL) and used his fame to generate public awareness of the issue. This in turn encouraged other Indigenous footballers to speak out forcing the AFL to take a tougher line on racism. In 2004, Michael Long organised 'The Long Walk' from Melbourne to Canberra to further improve relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
