BiographyHistory

An outstanding footballer who grew up in Western Australia, Nicky Winmar joined Melbourne's St Kilda Football Club in 1986. Winmar was the winner of the Michael Tuck Medal in 1996 and St Kilda's Best and Fairest award in 1985 and 1995, as well as being inducted into St Kilda's Hall of Fame in 2003. During his career, Winmar was selected for the All-Australian Team in 1991, 1995, and 2003. At the centre of a nationally publicised gesture, Winmar took a stand against the racial abuse that was being hurled at him during matches. After a match in 1993, he looked to the crowd, lifted his guernsey, and pointed to his skin in a display of pride in being Aboriginal. This occasion highlighted the presence of racial discrimination in Australian sport.
