The author of more than sixty books, Charles de Lint has been known for creating narratives which blend 'the magical and the mundane, a style that some critics have dubbed "urban fantasy"'. Described as 'a romantic' and 'a believer in human potential', de Lint wrote his 'ground-breaking...urban fantasy novel', Moonheart, in 1984 and has since gained a reputation for being a pioneer of the modern fantasy genre.
A naturalised citizen of Canada, de Lint 'features Canadian settings in books such as Moonheart: A Romance and Yarrow: An Autumn Tale...Many of his characters are "outsider" protagonists such as runaways, homosexuals, artists, and abuse survivors. His stories contain elements of both the fantastic and the ordinary, in which "the reader gets the impression that this other reality does exist and, given the right circumstances, is within reach"'.
