'Stylus' was a Brisbane poet and satirist who was active in the late 1850s and early 1860s. They initially contributed poems and sketches to the Moreton Bay Free Press, supposedly at the invitation of its then editor Theophilus Pugh. Then, when the Moreton Bay Free Press folded, and Pugh moved on to edit the Moreton Bay Courier, 'Stylus' began contributing to the Courier. In addition to their poetry and other items,
in 1860 'Stylus' wrote a series of satirical sketches on leading Queensland political figures of the day for the Moreton Bay Courier titled 'Parliamentary Pencillings'.
From their various works, it appears that 'Stylus' moved within Brisbane legal and political circles, and that they might have been a solicitor or barrister, or perhaps even a journalist at the Moreton Bay Courier.
