Desmond Kelly was born in Lithgow and moved to New Zealand in his youth. He has been a geologist, a teacher and a professional actor, and has written and recorded short stories for radio. He returned to Australia in 2005 and has won Redland City's Redlitzer Prize for Best Novel Manuscript and third prize in the Katharine Susannah Prichard Short Fiction Award.
