Born in the United States of America, Christina Thompson received a BA in English from Dartmouth University. Arriving in Australia in 1984, she worked as a freelance writer and reviewer while conducting research for her PhD on South Pacific Romance at the University of Melbourne.
After receiving her PhD, Thompson accepted an appointment as a postdoctoral researcher at The University of Queensland and continued to write occasionally for newspapers and magazines. She returned to Melbourne in 1994 as editor of Meanjin and remained in that position until 1998, guiding the magazine through a tense period that saw criticism from some board-members and major funding cuts.
Thompson returned to the United States in 1998. She was appointed editor of the Harvard Review in 2000. Thompson published Come on Shore and We Will Kill and Eat You All : An Unlikely Love Story, an account of her marriage and a history of the colonisation of New Zealand, in 2008. Her Sea People: The Puzzle of Polynesia was shortlisted for the Queensland Literary Awards (Non-Fiction) in 2019, won the Victorian Premier's Awards (Non-fiction) in 2020, and was shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards (Non-fiction) in 2020.
