Mary Nurniyn is the daughter of Yiwirrondo, or Jungle Dick, whom she maintains was a Jawoyn man. Mary has a close parental connection to Elsey Station through her mother, Wijwij (or Topsy), whose Aboriginal name means 'possum' and marks a connection with an important area on the Roper River not far from the station homestead. Mary is also an Aunt of Jackeroo Lirrawi.
