Michael Smith was born of a Greek mother (from Rhodes) and a British father. He attended High School in Adelaide and went on to the University of Adelaide gaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1973 and a Master of Arts degree in English literature in 1981. He has worked as a rock musician (including with the bands Scandal and The Atlantics) and as a freelance journalist, contributing feature articles, book and music reviews to various Australian periodicals. He began writing in 1970.
