BiographyHistory

Dimitris Katsoulis completed high school while working at the local cinema in Agrinio where he met Vasilaros, the Karagiozis player, and began to learn folk shadow theatre. In 1950 he went to Athens where he met Dimitris Mollas, another expert Karagiozis player in shadow theatre, who further instructed him. From 1951 to 1953 he studied at the Higher Film School of Athens. In 1957 he enrolled at the Pellos Katselis School of Drama and also joined a folk theatre with which he worked until 1962. He worked with revue groups in the years that followed, while also moving into film and television, acting and working on continuity, production, direction and lighting.

In Australia, Katsoulis co-founded the Children's Theatre of Melbourne while working at a metal factory. After the closing of the Children's Theatre, he went on to stage plays and became more involved with the shadow theatre. Considered the founder of Greek folk theatre in Melbourne, he began to give performances of Karagiozis in 1978 in Melbourne at Greek schools and various community and multicultural festivals. In 1979 he began writing his own Karagiozis plays for the educational series 'Akoute' [Listen] on Radio ABC, Melbourne.
