BiographyHistory

Hailed as ‘A Land Rights Champion Of the First Order’, Harry Jakamara Nelson was a respected member and elder of the Yuendumu community. In his earlier years Mr Nelson was one of only two Aboriginal school teachers in the region,  later going on to become a community development worker, an international representative of the Central Land Council and he also held positions at the Yuendumu Community Council. Mr Nelson was also a part of the truth telling of the Coniston massacre as well as being a part of the strong community response to the more recent police killing of Kumanjayi Walker. Mr Nelson is remembered as a peacekeeper, an advocate against domestic violence and a gentle elder who stood up for his country and his people.
