In a variant of the emperor's new clothes, a small girl wandering off the path in a much-admired unrestrained flower garden discovers the obverse of the coin of artful disorder in the neglected vegetable patch, which is tidily bedded and named, but the vegetables are almost destroyed.

Small-town, possibly slightly disabled girl comes to work in Melbourne, where she is alienated and on the point of losing her job, when she encounters two people from her home town. At the close she has either been invigorated by meeting them and will be promoted, or is fleeing to see them off and will be sacked.
