BiographyHistory

Born in Newton Stewart, Scotland, M. L. Hutchinson came to Sydney in 1853 with Robert Mackay. He assisted Mackay in his Glasgow Book Warehouse in Melbourne from 1860 until 1877, when he took over the business and built it into an active bookselling and publishing concern. He reputedly sold an enormous number of copies of Chamber's Encyclopaedia.

When Hutchinson visited England in 1883 he took five cases of apples with him, which advanced the marketing of Australian fresh produce in England.

Hutchinson was twice mayor of Brunswick, Victoria.
