Violet Donald Nanaku was born near Kalkaringi, Northern Territory. Nanaku's family worked on Wave Hill Station. She worked inside the homestead. At the time of the Wave Hill Station walk-off, Nanaku had a young family of her own. Later in life, she lived in Kalkaringi where she taught Gurindji in the local school.
