Stuart Black was born in Sydney and attended school in Sydney and London. After graduating from university, Black worked as a data analyst before moving into advertising. Black's work took him to London where he also continued his passion for music with occasional performances in piano bars. His overseas experiences formed the backdrop to his first published novel, Shallow Water (2009).
