Sadie Canning is a member of the Stolen Generations who was taken away from her parents at the age of four. Canning was placed in Mt Margaret Mission and began to train as a nurse in Perth in 1947. After attaining the position of matron in 1958, Canning pushed for change and ended the segregation of maternity patients at Leonora District Hospital. In 1964, Canning was awarded an MBE for nursing services to Leonora Hospital and received the Queens Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977. A Royal Flying Doctors service plane was also named Sadie Canning in her honour.
