  • Samih al-Basset is a Syrian painter and writer who has visited Ausrtalia. Exhibitions of his Australian-inspired paintings were held in Damascus in 1997 and 1998. One of his paintings entitled 'The Three Sisters' inspired by the same-named landmark in Katoomba, NSW, appears on the back cover of Kalimat issue 3.

    In 1998 al-Basset's book So...I loved You Australia [translation of title from Arabic original] was published in Syria. It included poetry and prose relating to the author's time in Australia.
