Born in Germany, Michael moved to Australia with his family, including twin brother Peter, when he was four years old. First based in Sydney, the family then moved to Brisbane in the late 1980s. Both brothers completed Bachelor's degrees from the Queensland College of Art, Michael in graphic design and Peter in film and television.
After their early short films, many made in high school, won awards on the festival circuits, the brothers were hired by Dick Marks to direct television commercials. they continued to make short films, and in 2003 made their first feature, Undead. The success of Undead led to a second film, Daybreakers (2010), and a third film, Predestination (2014), based on a Robert Heinlein short story. Both Daybreakers and Predestination starred Ethan Hawke.
In 2017, the eighth instalment in the Saw horror franchise was released, directed by the Spierigs: the series had been started with three films by Australians Leigh Whannell and James Wan. Most recently, they have directed Winchester, starring Helen Mirren.
Brother of Peter Spierig, with whom he is often credited as 'The Spierig Brothers'.
