Roger (Angi) Burgu, a senior man of the Mowanjum community, was born shortly after white pastoralists first established stations on Ngarinyin lands. As a child, he lived with his family on Pantijan, a station in his country on the Sale River. When his family moved to another station at Munja he had a few years of schooling although there was no school building. The Burgu family relocated several times during his childhood for various reasons, including cruelty and ill-treatment by station managers. They eventually settled at Mowanjum in the early 1950s. Burgu, a celebrated artist, paints and tells the stories of the Wandjinas and other beings associated with his Wandjina place, Galargarri.
