Dr. F. Von Sommer had 'a reputation for knowledge in natural science' and was employed by the Western Australian Government to examine and report 'on the geology of the Victoria, Moore River, and Avon districts, and the country about Capes Riche and Naturaliste.' Various reports by Von Sommer were published in the Perth Gazette and Western Australian Journal and the Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News in the late 1840s.
