Ben is a young Vietnamese Californian gangster who escapes the violence of a criminal life by fleeing to Brisbane. There he is offered a friendship, a lover, and a family. When the gang's leader, the Dean, comes to reclaim his most prized asset, Ben realises that he cannot outrun his past.

A young and innocent Vietnamese girl, Lien is placed out of her comfort zone as she travels to Australia to attend university and make her family proud. When her experiences begin to differ from her expectations, Lien is forced to keep the reality of her situation from her parents.

Chavonne, who has just left one of her many relationships, dreams of one day finding genuine love. Meanwhile, she shoulders the weight of responsibility at home, looking after her younger sister and alcoholic father after the death of her mother.
