BiographyHistory

Born in Tewkesbury, England, Frederick Preece was apprenticed as a bookseller and printer in Dorking, Surrey. He migrated to Melbourne with his parents in 1880, and was employed at M. L. Hutchinson's Glasgow Book Warehouse. He moved to Adelaide in 1883 and worked for a time for George Robertson and Co., before becoming manager of E. S. Wigg & Sons' book department in Rundle Street. He opened his own business, F. W. Preece Pty Ltd, in King William Street, Adelaide, in 1901. Preece established an excellent reputation as a high quality bookseller, and his shop became a meeting-place for writers and booklovers.

The business was continued after his death by his sons Edgar and John.
