BiographyHistory

William Gillies, who spent the greater part of his life in Victoria, was a teacher and author of many books on natural history. He bequeathed ten thousand pounds to the Education Department to encourage the study of music, natural history and reading.

Gillies contributed a number of non-fiction pieces to The School Paper, Victoria, including patriotic items such as 'National Service: How the Small Self May Become the Greater Self' and 'Can the British Empire Endure?'
