Linda Lester was born at Granite Downs. With her three brothers and sisters she was raised in Colebrook Home for Aboriginal Children in South Australia. She joined the Australian Women's Auxiliary Airforce during World War II, serving until 1947. She later met her husband while working in Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital after the war. She and her sister Nellie married the Nihill brothers Vincent and James. Nellie was the first Aboriginal nurse in Victoria.
