During the 1860s Bullum witnessed a number of massacres that were carried out by Native Police, and gave first hand accounts. Bullum was from the Wangerriburra people, one of a number of clans collectively called the Yugambeh people. During his lifetime Bullum had several Australian locations named after him and in 1913 Bullum helped create a dictionary of Wangerriburra language.
