Gwen's mother was a nurse, her name was Lily Newton. Her father was Scottish, he was a train driver and his name was George Wilkie. Gwen was the youngest of five children in her family and grew up in South Australia. With the loss of their father early in life, Gwen and the children had to help the family by collecting eggs. Gwen was kidnapped by Gypsies as a child and taken away. It was a year until she was reunited with her family. Her father passed away when Gwen was a child and her mother raised her and her brothers and sisters. Gwen met a man in Melbourne named Gordon and they married.
