Launched on 3 August 2007, and operating from the Yolngu Multimedia Archive and Production Centre in Yirrkala (Northern Territory), the Mulka Project seeks to provide meaningful employment and empowerment to the Northern Territory's Yirrkala community by allowing Yolngu Aboriginal people to take control of their culture using modern digital media.
Ever since Yirrkala was founded as a mission station in 1935 on the edge of Yirrkala Creek, outsiders have visited and taken film, audio and still images of Yolngu People. These have then been taken away to museums, academic and personal collections and/or produced as documentaries or feature films. The project's objective is to collect as much of the surviving film, sound and images that can be located and make these available through an accessible digital library. The project also trains the Yolngu community in contemporary professional media technology and production so that they can tell their own stories from now on.
