Yothu Yindi are a Yolngu band from the north-east coast of Australia's Northern Territory, the Yolngu homelands. The Yolngu members of the band celebrate their deep spiritual connections with the land.
Yothu Yindi's song 'Treaty' was created as a protest against the Hawke Government's failure to deliver on its 1988 promise to conclude a treaty with Aboriginal people by 1990. 'Treaty' became the first song in the Yolgnu language to enter the pop charts: the dance remix peaked at no. 11 on the charts.
In August 2009, 'Treaty' became part of the collection of the National Film and Sound Archive's Sounds of Australia: The National Registry of Recorded Sound.
In 2012, Yothu Yindi were inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame. In 2000, they performed at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games.
