Marie Ramsland gained her PhD in 1991 and between 1993 and 2004 lectured in French at the University of Newcastle. As well as researching and writing, Ramsland has translated into English a number of works written by French authors, including Michel Tournier's La Couleuvrine and Jeanne Cordelier's Hanoi Blues.
