Andrew Ross was the Director of Playhouse Theatre's Theatre-In-Education team in Western Australia during the 1970s. He was Director of the Black Swan Theatre in Perth, and La Boite Theatre in Brisbane, as well as the Melbourne University Theatre Department, before being appointed as artistic director of the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2003. Ross taught and directed at the Victorian College for the Arts, and was Adjunct Professor at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, as well as an Indonesian-Australia Merdeka Fellow.
He directed premieres of a number of significant Western Australian plays, and also adapted Randolph Stow's novels Midnite and Tourmaline for the stage, as well as adapting Volker Ludwig's 'Max and Milli: A Play for Children from Five Years' for the 1982 Festival of Perth. Ross's productions toured throughout Australia, and to Canada and the United Kingdom, and won a number of awards including a Melbourne Greenroom Award and the Age Melbourne Critics' Award for Best Production.
Ross died in March 2022, after a long struggle with cancer.
