BiographyHistory

Peter Toyne has been a major contributer to the establishment of the Warlpiri Media Association. In 1983, Toyne began making videos and in 1985 he and his colleagues began broadcasting the videos from their pirate television station. At first, the government would not support the initative and sent police to shut it down, but later the Department of Aboriginal Affairs provided equipment and funding, and licensed the project. The video programs combine traditional and modern content such as making boomerangs and spears, information about local sports and meetings, and recordings of local storytellers in addition to Aboriginal news.
