A short biography of Gene Dowell appears in the November 1945 issue of the
Australian Journal. The editor states that Dowell is a 'West Australian who, after working as a typist and bookkeeper in her native State, left for Sydney nearly three years ago. Until then, although writing occasionally as a hobby, she hadn't taken the job seriously, but after arriving in Sydney she really got down to business, and with considerable success.'
