BiographyHistory

Jose Buscunan-Gomez, the cartoonist known as Pepe, arrived in Australia in 1973 after escaping his native Chile, where he was imprisoned by the Pinochet regime. Arriving in Australia as a refugee, Bascunan-Gomez settled in Melbourne working in a variety of jobs including building roads and cleaning. In 1993 he relocated to Nowra where he continued cleaning as well as drawing cartoons for newspapers and The Shoalhaven and Nowra News.
