David Bell was raised in Redfern. His earlier career included boxing and he achieved the rank of number fifteen in the world. Bell fought three Australian titles throughout his boxing career and won the New South Wales title.
Between 1984 and 1991, Bell worked as a Police Liaison Officer in Redfern where he helped to set up the Council of Elders.
