Drinkwater has been a librarian at the National Library of Australia, and a Research Officer in the Department of the Senate, Parliament House, Canberra. He has published articles on Australian library history and is co-author of A Dictionary of Australian Politics (1980). His M.A. thesis was entitled "Librarian Errant: E. Morris Miller and Australian Librarianship" (Monash University, 1983).
