BiographyHistory

James Cowan wrote a number of books on Aboriginal religion, culture, spirituality and artwork. Born in Melbourne and raised in Sydney, he also spent time living in the Tanami Desert (in Balgo Hills), Cortona in Italy, and Buenos Aires in Argentina. He died in New South Wales in 2018.

Cowan's published work included poetry and memoirs, as well as his work on Aboriginal culture. He completed his PhD (Creative Writing, incl. Playwriting) at The University of Queensland in 2016, with a creative biographical study of the life and times of Vespasiano Gonzaga, duke of Sabbioneta (1531-1591).
