BiographyHistory

George Skeene is a Yirrganydji Elder and a highly respected community member who has contributed significantly to history and education in the wider Cairns area. Skeene has been a member of the Cairns Historical Society and has led guided tours at the Cairns Museum. He has also contributed to James Cook University history classes and is passionate about Yirrganydji history and researching objects of repatriation from overseas museums and having them returned to their place of origin.

In 2003, George Skeene was awarded a Wet Tropics Management Authority Cassowary Award in the category, Unsung Hero, for his commitment to preserving Yirrganydji culture and sharing his knowledge with the wider community.
