BiographyHistory

Peter Norman was an athlete best known for winning the silver medal in the 200 metres at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. At the medal ceremony for the event, the black American gold and bronze medal winners, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, gave the Black Power salute while Norman joined in with a silent protest by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. Smith and Carlos offered eulogies and were pall bearers at Norman's funeral in 2006.

Norman is the uncle of filmmaker and actor Matt Norman.
