Tom O'Regan was an Australian academic who published widely in the field of cultural studies with a special focus on film and television. A Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (AHFA) since 2002, his research interests included cultural and media policy, international screen and media industries, the relation between new and old media, Australian film and television, cultural organisations, broadcast ratings, and audience development.
Among his publications are Australian Television Culture (1993), Australian National Cinema (1996), and (with Ben Goldsmith) The Film Studio (2005). O'Regan also published articles and book chapters on Australian film and television, international film and television (particularly Hollywood), cultural and media policy, and new media and old media. As an editor, he co-produced Mobilising the Audience (2002) with M. Balnaves and J. Sternberg; An Australian Film Reader (1985) and The Australian Screen (1989) with Albert Moran; and The Moving Image: The History of Film and Television in Western Australia 1896-1985 (1985) and History on/and/in Film (1987) with Brian Shoesmith.
O'Regan's career achievements included positions as Director of the Centre for Research in Culture and Communication (1996-1998, Murdoch University); Director of the Australian Key Centre for Cultural and Media Policy (1999-2002, Griffith University); Australian UNESCO-Orbicom Professor of Communication (2002-2003), and Head of the School of English, Media Studies and Art History at The University of Queensland (2005-2008). He was also a valued member of the AustLit Management Committee for many years prior to his death.
