Dorothy Harrison graduated from Prague University and worked as a journalist for several European newspapers. Her first husband was killed during World War II and she and her children were able to escape to the Western Allied Zone in Austria.
Before coming to Australia in the late 1940s or early 1950s, Harrison had published short stories, plays and a novel, but details of these have not been traced although it is known that one of her plays was filmed in Czechoslovakia. Since coming to Australia she has worked as a teacher.
