Jason Chatfield was born and raised in Western Australia. He lived in Karratha until the age of four before returning to his birthplace of Perth. Chatfield became interested in cartooning at a very early age. He writes: 'I was taught about the industry and learnt very quickly through other cartoonists such a Dean Alston, Peter Broelman, James Kemsley, Paul Rigby and Rolf Harris, among several others.' Chatfield has worked as an editorial cartoonist since the age of nineteen, working under the Fremantle Herald editor Brian Mitchell. He has produced weekly editorial cartoons, and has also worked as a caricaturist at corporate events and on a commission basis. Chatfield has illustrated several internationally published books. He has performed as a stand-up comic and confesses to playing the guitar 'poorly'.
In 2007 Chatfield took over from James Kemsley as the creator of the Ginger Meggs cartoon strip.
