BiographyHistory

Blackfella Films is an independent film production company established by Rachel Perkins and Darren Dale in 1992 as a vehicle for creating innovative and high quality Indigenous screen productions. The company maintains strong links with the Indigenous production sector through its participation in the associations, Indigenous Screen Australia, the Australian Indigenous Communications Association, and the National Indigenous Television Service. The company also contracts freelance indigenous practitioners in key roles on a project by project basis.

Among Blackfella Films productions are the 13-part international indigenous documentary series co-production From Spirit to Spirit (1993); Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival National Tour 2007-2009; three short films for SBS Television titled Pay Back, Mimi and Flat; and two shorts films in 2009 for the ABC titled, Jacob and The Party Shoes. The company has additionally undertaken corporate work for QANTAS (producing in-flight Entertainment) and provided a video installation for the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (Melbourne).

Blackfella Films has acted as Supervising Producer to the National Indigenous Documentary Fund for five half hour documentaries made on behalf of the Australian Film Commission (AFC). It also financed the first Indigenous Drama Initiative of six short films for the AFC and SBS Television, and has published both online and print versions of The Black Book, an Indigenous media and arts directory. Blackfella Films' other projects include the curatorial program of the Message Sticks Film Festival at the Sydney Opera House (2002-2009).
