W. H. G. (George) Groom was the grandson of W. H. Groom of The Toowoomba Chronicle. Groom purchased The Johnstone River Advocate in 1927 following the death of Patrick James Leahy and ran the paper (subsequently known as The Evening Advocate) for almost 50 years. He also launched The Tableland Examiner which he merged with The Barron Valley Advocate on 1 July 1931. Then, on 26 February 1939, he launched The Sunday Australian in Cairns.
