She was born at Tjinjadpa, west of Jupiter Well on the Canning Stock Route in Western Australia, around the year 1920 and has lived at several of the Balgo Mission sites. Nampitjin had six daughters with her husband Gimme but another daughter, born to a white drover, was taken away by the authorities. Her artistic career began relatively late in life, after her second marriage, but she has made a considerable impact nationally and internationally.
