Bruce Yunkarporta lived with his family till he was eight. Then the missionary Bill McKenzie wrestled with Yunkaporta's father and bribed him to allow them to take the children away to Aurukun Mission, where they lived in dormitories. He stayed on the mission until he was seventeen. Later in life, Yunkarporta became a Justice of the Peace at Aurukun.
