Established in 1960, The National Library of Australia (NLA) is the largest reference library of Australia, and Australia's legal deposit library.
The NLA also publishes a number of books each year through its NLA Publishing imprint. In 2019-2020, that number was seventeen, but the library announced that it would cut the total number of publications to eight in 2020-21, with only two of those being children's books: NLA director-general Marie-Louise Ayres said that the imprint was unprofitable, in a time when the ongoing financial viability of the library remained a challenge.
