Sonia Rose Piper nee Freeman was born at Gundagai in 1944. Her mother was Minnie Eileen Freeman from Gooloogong and her father was Ernest 'Ned' Joseph Freeman. Sonia lived on Brungle mission in a hut with dirt floors. She and her siblings would go around to the white people and ask for any old books. They would then mix flour and water and paper the walls of their hut to keep the draughts out.
